How photosynthesis works

A science lesson for 8th grade: how a plant makes its own food from light, water and air

Lesson plan

  1. A leaf is a tiny kitchen
  2. Photosynthesis step by step
  3. Photosynthesis around us
  4. Three questions to check yourself

A leaf is a tiny kitchen

A plant does not need to look for food: it makes its own. This happens in the leaves, inside tiny green grains called chloroplasts.

  • Ingredients: water and carbon dioxide
  • Energy: sunlight
  • Result: sugar and oxygen

Photosynthesis step by step

01
Roots take up water
Water rises through the stem to every leaf
02
Leaves take in air
Carbon dioxide enters through tiny pores called stomata
03
Chlorophyll catches light
The green pigment turns sunlight into energy
04
Sugar and oxygen are made
The plant keeps the sugar and releases oxygen into the air

Photosynthesis around us

At home and outdoors

  • A houseplant leans towards the window to get more light
  • Grass under a board left on the lawn turns yellow in a week
  • Every apple, potato and slice of bread began as sugar in a leaf

Across the planet

  • About half the oxygen we breathe comes from tiny algae in the ocean
  • Forests take in carbon dioxide and slow down climate change
  • Coal is made of plants that lived 300 million years ago

Question 1: what gas does a leaf need to make sugar?

Choose an option

Two more questions to think about

  • Why does a plant kept in a dark cupboard turn pale and weak?
  • An oak weighs several tonnes. Where did most of that mass come from?
